# How to Turn On Two-Step Verification

> Protect your Ayrshare dashboard login with a code from an authenticator app. Learn how to turn it on, keep your codes safe, and what to do if you lose access.

Two-step verification adds a second step to signing in to the [Ayrshare Dashboard](https://app.ayrshare.com): after your password, you enter a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. Someone who learns your password still can't sign in without that code.

It is optional and available on every plan for accounts that sign in with an email and password. If you sign in with Google or GitHub only, turn on two-step verification in your Google or GitHub account instead; Ayrshare uses their sign-in.

Two-step verification protects signing in to the dashboard. It does not change how your API key works.

You need an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password or Authy.

1. Sign in to the [Ayrshare Dashboard](https://app.ayrshare.com) and open the **Account** page.
2. In **Two-Step Verification**, click **Set Up**.
3. If your email address isn't verified yet, click **Send verification email**, open the link in the email, then come back and click **Continue**.
4. Confirm it's you with your current password. If your account also signs in with Google or GitHub, you can confirm with that instead.
5. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app. If you can't scan it, type the setup key shown under the QR code into the app instead.
6. Enter the 6-digit code the app shows, give the device a name such as "Work phone", and click **Turn on**.

From then on, each time you sign in you'll be asked for a code from your authenticator app. If your account also signs in with Google or GitHub, you'll be asked for the code then too.

Browsers and devices that are already signed in stay signed in when you turn it on. If you turned it on because a device was lost or someone else had your password, also [reset your password](/docs/help-center/account/how_do_i_reset_my_password), which signs out your other sessions. After that, sign in again on those devices and enter a code from your authenticator app when asked.

  Keep Your Codes Safe
</h2>

You can set up one authenticator app. If you lose the device it's on, you won't be able to sign in until we turn two-step verification off for you. To avoid that, use an authenticator app that backs up your codes to your account, such as Google Authenticator signed in to your Google account, Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password or Authy, so you can get them back on a new phone.

<h2 id="turn-off">
  Turn Off Two-Step Verification
</h2>

On the **Account** page, click **Remove** next to your authenticator app. You'll confirm it's you and enter a code first. Removing it turns two-step verification off and signs you out of Ayrshare on your other browsers and devices.

  Lost Access to Your Authenticator
</h2>

If you can't get a code from your authenticator app, [contact us](mailto:contact@ayrshare.com) from the email address on your Ayrshare account. To protect your account we'll verify that you own it before we turn two-step verification off, so you can sign in with your password and set it up again.

If two-step verification was turned on without you, someone else knows your password. [Reset your password](/docs/help-center/account/how_do_i_reset_my_password) first, with **Forgot Password** on the sign-in page (the emailed link works without a code), then contact us and say it wasn't you. We'll turn two-step verification off only after your password has been reset, so the other person can't turn it back on.

<h2 id="team-members">
  Team Members and User Profiles
</h2>

Each person who signs in with their own email and password manages their own two-step verification from the **Account** page. Each login is protected separately, and team members can switch into your User Profiles, so ask every team member to turn it on too. After you switch profiles from the **User Profiles** page, including switching back to your own, the **Account** page asks you to sign out and sign back in directly, with your password, Google or GitHub, before you change two-step verification. A User Profile's setting belongs to the login of whoever signs in to that profile directly.
